NYC SBS Home Health Aide Training Program

The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS), in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) and the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare (NYACH), offers a no-cost, online Home Health Aide (HHA) training and certification program. This initiative, developed during the COVID-19 public health emergency, aims to support the long-term care workforce and fill critical job openings in the sector. Upon successful completion and certification, participants are employed by home care agencies.

Training and Certification

The HHA Training Program is designed to prepare individuals for the long-term care sector, particularly during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis. The program includes 100 hours of online training over three weeks, covering necessary topics from the NYS Department of Health HHA curriculum, with additional content developed by PHI. It also includes an 8-hour in-person supervised practical training. Participants need access to a computer with a video camera and a stable internet connection.

Eligibility and Application

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the U.S., and willing to work flexible schedules. No formal healthcare experience or high school diploma is required, but basic computer literacy and communication skills are essential. The application process involves completing an online application, registering with Workforce1, a phone screening, and possibly an interview with an employer partner.

Employment and Benefits

Graduates receive New York State Certification and are hired by home care agency partners. The program addresses the physical demands of the job and the potential of working with COVID-19 patients, providing necessary protective equipment. The compensation for HHAs starts at $15 per hour, with an annual median wage of around $28,000 in NYC. Health insurance is offered after three months of work, subject to a minimum of 100 hours per month.
