CCNY’s Home Health Aide Training Program

The City College of New York (CCNY) offers a Certified Home Health Aide (HHA) Training Program, aimed at providing comprehensive training for individuals aspiring to become Certified Home Health Aides. This program is a significant opportunity given the high demand for HHAs in New York State, especially in New York City where there are nearly 150,000 HHAs.

Role and Responsibilities of Home Health Aides

Home Health Aides play a crucial role in assisting patients who are unable to live independently. Their responsibilities include providing personal care to clients, such as general housekeeping, meal preparation, bathing, dressing, and grooming. Additionally, HHAs may perform routine health tasks like checking vital signs, changing bandages, and dressing wounds. Employment opportunities for HHAs are primarily found in home care agencies, and they usually work in private homes, though some may work in other long-term care settings.

Program Structure and Requirements

The HHA training classes are conducted in person, and clinical training takes place at a nursing facility. No prior experience is required to enroll in the program; however, applicants must be able to read at a 6th-grade level. A high school diploma or equivalent is not necessary for admission. Importantly, all students must be vaccinated against Covid-19 as per the guidelines provided by the City University of New York (CUNY) on their coronavirus FAQs page.
